Rebuild of Evangelion 1.01

May 25th, 2008

So I have watched Rebuild of Evangelion 1.01 on Saturday.

NERV

I really dont know what to put here, I don’t remember enough of the original to list off the differences between the two. It pretty much summarizes what happens in the first 4-6 episodes of the series.

Overall, it appears to have updated the animation and added some cgi to the series.

Initial D

May 22nd, 2008

Initial D is an older anime but I got addicted to it pretty quick.

AE86

Initial D focuses around Takumi, a high school student who is thrown into the world of street racing in the Akina region of Japan. Little does he know that he already has the skills to be one of the best in all of Japan.

I’ve watched the series about 3 times over now and it is one of my guilty pleasures. I don’t really have a reason to watch it, and some people may find it boring to watch but to each their own.

There is currently 4 stages in the anime (stages 1, 2, and 4 are TV seasons and 3rd is an OVA). They also have an extra stage that follows 1st stage and the battle stages which follows the 3rd stage and 4th stage which basically summarize the stages before it and show more of the car battles. One of the unique things about the stages is that each stage has its own animation style, with the exception of 3rd stage which has the same animation style as 2nd stage. Oddly enough, upon its North American release, 1st stage and 2nd stage were released as one which would confuse the casual viewer of anime.

One of the things that I enjoy the most about this series is the soundtrack. The Japanese soundtrack is perfect for this series, from the music in the background to the opening and ending themes. Initial D’s soundtrack consists of a number of Eurobeat tracks which includes the original “Night of Fire” track.
Also M.O.V.E. (formally known as MOVE) provides both the opening and closing tracks to all of the stages. I will touch on M.O.V.E on another post, but if you want to hear a good example of J-POP at its best this is a good place to start.

Currently I am waiting for a 5th Stage. There has been no confirmation that one will be coming, however the manga is still going on in Japan so there is a good possibility that one will be coming soon.
Also on Initial D, there was a live action movie loosely based on the series released in Hong Kong. Many people did not like the movie saying that it did not stay true to the series; I however enjoyed it because I don’t need a complete re-telling of the story, that’s why I have the anime. They kept the important parts of the series in the movie and made a few compromises which I feel are justified.

That’s my take on Initial D, soon to come will be M.O.V.E.

Naruto/Bleach/Inu-Yasha

May 22nd, 2008

Naruto and Bleach have fallen into what I call Inu-Yasha hell.

I never initially got into Inu-Yasha and when I did I stopped watching because it just got very long and boring. The same thing happend with Naruto and Bleach. I had been watching both series since they began and they were good. However both animes have just become a strung out cash grab.

I haven’t watched the past month and half of Naruto and Bleach and I don’t plan to. I think I’ve realized that I perfer the animes that actually have an ending.

So no more Naruto or Bleach for me.

GTA IV

May 21st, 2008

So, as I mentioned on my previous post I had finished GTA IV.

GTA IV

Here is my review sandwich where I start with something’s I like, fill the middle with dislikes, and finish off with what I like… It’s a dislike sandwich with likes for bread. :P

First my likes:

  • Graphics – These were expected to have been improved for the next gen systems and I am very pleased… although I wonder what a cell-shaded version of GTA would look like.
  • Homage to the original GTA games – If you look closely enough in the game you will find homage’s to the previous games… examples would be at the mini golf area where you see buildings from previous games, or some of the graffiti on the walls paying tribute to the previous characters.

Now my dislikes:

  • Map Size – felt that the map on this chapter was smaller in comparison to San Andreas. One of the things I found fun to do was just cruise around on the highway between cities in SA but I don’t get that in this chapter.
  • Planes – You can’t fly planes… Sure it’s a small detail but I would have really liked to fly planes into the buildings… oh geez… did I really just type that…

Last part of things I like:

  • Storyline – I really enjoyed the storyline in this one. If you haven’t played the game I’m not going to ruin this part but it is a really good one.
  • GPS – Seriously… I wish this was in SA because it would have made things so much easier in the game. No more getting lost, although I found in the areas where there is a freeway and a roadway underneath the freeway it doesn’t know which one you are on…

So I give GTA IV 8 STD filled hookers out of 10.

Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

May 19th, 2008

So I figured that I would post something tonight just for content.

If you have not watched Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya I suggest that you do because it is worth the watch. I have just finished watching Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya for the 3rd or 4th time and I keep finding more and more easter eggs.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

Haruhi Suzumiya is a first year highschool student who is interested in supernatural beings (EX. Aliens, Time Travelers, ESPers, etc.) and creates a highschool club to the investigation of such beings. Little does she realize that they do exist and that some of the people in her club that she had handpicked are these beings.

I remember the first time I watched it I thought I missed some episodes or that the videos were not in the correct order but after some research I found out that it was purposely released in a non-chronological order. I watched in chronological order the first time and it left me un-fulfilled, mostly because the last episode was viewed right in the middle. So the second time I watched it was more fulfilling.

Going back to the easter eggs, you can click on the following links to know what I mean:

Also I finished GTA IV earlier in the week so I will post my thoughts of it as well as my thoughts on Initial D later this week.
